چکیده

After an initial lag phase dedicated to the sequencing of easily cultured saprotrophic fungi (among the first three published genomes were the models Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Schizosaccharomyces pombe and Neurospora crassa) and species of biomedical, agricultural or biotechnological interest, genomics is now poised to rapidly permeate the fields of fungal ecology and evolution. As regards mycorrhizal associations, the story begins in 2008 with the publication of the genome of the agaric Laccaria bicolor (Martin et al., 2008), followed 2 yr later by publication of the Black Truffle of P!erigordTubermelanosporum genome (Martin et al., 2010). Within the last 2 yr, the Joint Genome Institute (JGI; http://jgi.doe.gov/) of the US Department of Energy has made available to the scientific community the genomes of at least a dozen additional mycorrhizal species and many more are expected to be released in the near future. Mycorrhizal fungal genome projects are part of an initiative for systematic sequencing of species representative of ecological important functional groups, including plant pathogens and wood rotters and will cover all major fungal phyla.

Evolving insights to understanding mycorrhizas

Almost all land plant species form a symbiosis with mycorrhizal fungi. These soil fungi provide nutrients and other services to plants in return for plant carbohydrates. The recent application of microbial metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and metabolomics to plants and their immediate surroundings confirms the key role of mycorrhizal fungi, rhizosphere bacteria and fungi, and suggests a world...

Integration of genomics and proteomics into marine microbial ecology

Genomics and proteomics of microorganisms are revolutionizing our understanding of marine microbial ecology. In this essay we address this by discussing (1) what microbial genome resources are available for marine ecologists, (2) how single-organism genomics and proteomics have revealed new microbial functions in the marine ecosystem, and (3) how the integration of metagenomics, metaproteomics ...

Dominant forest tree mycorrhizal type mediates understory plant invasions.

Forest mycorrhizal type mediates nutrient dynamics, which in turn can influence forest community structure and processes. Using forest inventory data, we explored how dominant forest tree mycorrhizal type affects understory plant invasions with consideration of forest structure and soil properties. We found that arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) dominant forests, which are characterised by thin fores...

Marine Microbial Metagenomics: From Individual to the Environment

Microbes are the most abundant biological entities on earth, therefore, studying them is important for understanding their roles in global ecology. The science of metagenomics is a relatively young field of research that has enjoyed significant effort since its inception in 1998. Studies using next-generation sequencing techniques on single genomes and collections of genomes have not only led t...
